ISTE 2011 Overview

Now that I am home and am processing the information from ISTE 2011, I thought I would highlight some of the ideas that stood out for me.

These are some of the highlights from the ISTE conference:

* I live blogged all the sessions I attended at www.msrussell.com- some of the best ones are listed below

Sites I thought were interesting:

* Library of Congress: www.loc.gov

The Library's digitized collection. Check out the new music section.

* Whiteboard resources:

  • learn about web resources for interactive activities on all topics or subjects
  • discover tips and tricks to making original activities
  • see how the interactive whiteboard can increase student engagement
  • leave the learning station with techniques, strategies and ideas they can quickly put into practice
  • learn how to create an inexpensive, interactive whiteboard with a few easily attainable components

* "They Snooze You Lose" Lynell Burmark http://educatebetter.org/resources.html
Lynell had some awesome ideas for making engaging presentations. Her book my be worth the money to purchase. She suggested a book that has a free DVD presentation of quotes that I think I will purchase. Would be a great ice breaker at the beginning of the year.

The flipped classroom:
http://mast.unco.edu/programs/vodcasting/

This site is devoted to teaching educators how to use vodcasting to flip your classroom. This is the brainchild of Jonathan Bergmann and Aaron Sams who are pioneers in the field of using vodcasts in the classroom. They have devised a new method of teaching called Pre-Vodcasting and the Flipped Classroom. In this model, students watch vodcasts at home and class time is spent in engaging hands-on activities and directed problem solving. Both Jonathan Bergmann and Aaron Sams are High School Science teachers in Woodland Park Colorado, at the base of Pikes Peak. Thus far, students using the Pre-Vodcasting model have been very successful in mastering Chemistry. We believe that all teachers can benefit from Vodcasting their lessons live, and that the Pre-Vodcasting and Flipped Classroom can revolutionize instruction in Math, Science, and Foreign Language.
